The Heat was an 80’s rock band that was extremely popular in
the Midwest; formed in 1985, based out of Hays, Kansas. The
band was the only group out of Kansas to appear on the nationally syndicated television show Star Search in 1987!
The Heat:
Dave Pfeifer, Lead Vocals
Danny Pfeifer, Bass & Vocals
Tim Pfeifer, Drums & Vocals
Anthony Pfeifer, Guitar, Keyboards & Vocals
Kori Wilcox, Lead Guitar & Vocals
The bands’ distinguishing points--amazing four-part vocals, powerful songwriting, high energy live performances and superb lead guitar work by Kori.
Regionally in the states of Kansas, Missouri, Colorado and Nebraska, The Heat performed as opening act for: 38 Special, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Miami Sound Machine (Gloria Estefan), John Waite, The Jets, Steele Breeze, BTO, John Kay’s Steppenwolf and The Producers.
In 1986 The Heat was the only regional act chosen to perform three days of opening acts at the Rock And Roll Expo in Wichita, Kansas. Included in the “Expo” talent lineup were: The Marshall Tucker Band, Sha Na Na, Greg Allman Band, Roy Orbison, Chuck Berry, Atlantic Star, and Klymaxx.
The Heat received regional corporate sponsorship from Stop-2-Shop (a convenience store chain), and APCO Petroleum with locations throughout Kansas, Colorado, and Nebraska. The two companies sponsored concerts throughout Kansas for The Heat as well as provided funds for The Heat’s Newsletter, which was distributed to over 3,000 people. The Newsletter was a four-page tab published every two months that contained information about bands activities as well as a schedule of the band’s performances. Other regional distributors Frito Lay, Coors and Pepsi were also instrumental in sponsorship for the band. Stop-2-Shop, APCO Petroleum and regional Miller Genuine Draft Distributor also sponsored a 30-minute radio show featuring The Heat and its music. The show aired on KJLS, Hays, KS, in September of 1987.
After appearing on Star Search the band signed with management in Los Angeles, CA with Sam Riddle, producer of Star Search, Eddie Lambert, a long time representative of MOTOWN Records along with Dana Miller and Dean Gross, who at the time managed Rick Springfield.
In 1986 the group released their recording "West End Story" in a ten song cassette album. In 1988
the band recorded a single “Too Far Too Fast” written by Anthony Pfeifer, Michael Des Barres and
Paul Chiten, two staff writers for Paramount Pictures at the time, of which appeared in the motion picture DISTANT THUNDER as well as the motion picture TRUE COLORS. The Heat did the arrangement and performance of the song and received musical credits. Through the year 1990 the band recorded at least two additional albums worth of original material that was never pressed and/or distributed partly due to recording label contracts in L.A. and Japan that never solidified.
